The Hidden Gut Issues No One Talks About After Having Kids
Updated: Jan 15
Becoming a mom is life-changing in every way — the joy, the love, the sleepless nights… and sometimes, the unexpected toll it takes on your body. What no one tells you is how deeply having a baby can impact your gut health, digestion, and even your blood sugar.
After having my baby girl, I realized that my body felt completely different. My digestion was off, my energy dipped at strange times, and my blood sugar seemed unpredictable — even though I was trying to eat “healthy.” For almost two years, I felt like I had lost touch with myself.
Hormones, Stress, and the Gut
After pregnancy, our hormones are all over the place. Estrogen and progesterone fluctuate, cortisol (our stress hormone) can spike from sleepless nights and constant demands, and all of this affects how our gut functions.
Digestion slows down, leading to bloating, irregular bowel movements, and discomfort.
Blood sugar can become unstable, making you crave sugar or feel fatigued.
Stress and cortisol can inflame the gut lining and disrupt the balance of healthy bacteria.
It’s easy to feel like your body is “broken” — but the truth is, it’s just asking for support.
My Gentle Healing Approach
I didn’t want to overhaul my life or follow extreme protocols. Instead, I focused on simple, daily routines that could gently support my gut and help me feel like myself again:
Balanced meals with protein, fiber, and healthy fats to stabilize blood sugar.
Consistent, small habits like drinking water first thing in the morning and moving my body gently.
Prioritizing rest and stress relief through breathing, meditation, and gentle stretches.
Listening to my gut — noticing which foods supported me and which left me feeling off.
Slowly but surely, my digestion improved, my blood sugars stabilized, and I finally felt like me again — after nearly two years. Focusing on my gut first created a ripple effect across my health, energy, and even my mindset.
You Can Heal, Too
